After escorting Lafayette around the neighborhood, Poe and the honor guard took the general to the Old Stone House, the residence of the Ege family which had helped supply Lafayette’s troops during the Revolution. In the years to come, Poe would pass the house several times on his walks down Main Street to Rockett’s Landing. The Old Stone House is the oldest residential building that is still standing in Richmond, Virginia.

The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed. The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good.
